I'm wondering if Openthinclient server cannot be installed on Server 2008 R2.
As this is the only difference since the last implementation which worked?

This is from a standard install of Openthinclient with hardly any configuration
changes.
I get similar results from FreeRDP.

try to find out the reason, why the RDP client won't start:
Please open a xterm (ctrl+alt+shift+x) and copy+paste the starter-command from
the desktop-icon
(rightclick-->properties-->starter) into it.
