Waheed,
since it is highly likely that Terry is now sleeping (he is located
in Australia) I will give an answer to these questions.
Footprint (aka. Land Pattern or Decal)- this is the cumulative collection of
pads, silkscreen, soldermask & assembly details which make up the PCB
details for a component attachment point. It is basically the representation
of the component in PCB copper pads, silkscreen outline and other details on
the PCB, all packaged together and stored in the library for utilization
whenever that component representation is needed on a PCB. A footprint is
created once for a particular component, stored in a Library and then
recalled from the library to be utilized any time that component is used on
a PCB design.
Via(s) - come in several different flavors. A via on a two sided PCB will
always be visible on both sides of the PCB and will have a small hole
through the board. On multi-layer PCBs a via can be Through (goes all the
way through all layers of the PCB, similar to a via on a 2 sided PCB, it is
visible from both sides of the PCB), Blind (is only visible from one side of
the PCB and terminates somewhere within the internal PCB multilayer
structure) or Buried (it is buried within the multilayer structure starting
and stopping on layers within the PCB and not visible from the external PCB
layers).
Sincerely,
Brad Velander.
