Hello,

the OpenVAS developers are proud to announce that
the test phase for the upcoming 3.0 series started
and the first 3.0-beta releases have become available.

If you like to be a beta-tester you are very welcome
and you should read this announcement very carefully.

Major new features are:
 * New arrangement of modules and dependencies
   (see below on New Architecture)
 * IPv6 support
 * WMI clients support
 * Optional Extensions: New modules OpenVAS Manager
    and OpenVAS Administrator

Apart from this, comprehensive internal cleanups happened and
will be continued for the final 3.0.0 release. The APIs of
the beta releases will undergo further modifications.

Compatibility:
The new OpenVAS Scanner remains compatible with the
OpenVAS NVT Feed as well as with the Greenbone Security Feed.
Also, it is possible to use the new OpenVAS Scanner
with the OpenVAS-Client 2.0.
OpenVAS Client 3.0 can connect to both concurrently,
OpenVAS Scanner 3.0 and OpenVAS Server 2.0 and even
connect to OpenVAS Manager via the new OpenVAS
Management Protocol (OMP).

New Architecture:
OpenVAS 3.0 introduces a new architecture where openvas-libraries
now includes openvas-libnasl as well as redundant code from openvas-client.
The module openvas-server is renamed to openvas-scanner and includes any
platform-dependent elements of openvas-plugins. As a result of this,
the source code will shrink, though new features are added. Also,
for running just the scanner only 2 modules are required (instead of 4
as for OpenVAS 2.0).
Version 3.0 also prepares the upcoming OpenVAS Manager and OpenVAS
Administrator as optional extension. This combination leverages
the vulnerability scanner to a comprehensive vulnerability
management solution.

However, if you like to try out the beta version of the upcoming
3.0 release, you should install it separately from your 2.0 stable
release.

The OpenVAS team very much appreciates reports on any experiences
with this first beta of the 3.0 series. Please report on the OpenVAS
mailing lists.

Of course, the OpenVAS 2.0 series will be further maintained by
the OpenVAS team.

Best regards (on behalf of the growing OpenVAS developer team that
made this new generation of OpenVAS possible)

        Jan-Oliver Wagner
