Passing the 15000th Network Vulnerability Test (NVT) is a perfect
occasion to report about the progress of the OpenVAS project[1].

In October 2008 the systematic development of new NVTs
started with a base of around 5800 Tests, 10000 was passed in April 2009.
The public OpenVAS NVT Feed Service continues to deliver 3-10 new vulnerability
tests every day.

In July 2009 the OpenVAS development team gathered at the OpenVAS developer
conference in Osnabrück, Germany. With great success: Major results,
apart from the get-together-synergies, are the designs for the upcoming
OpenVAS 3.0 which is scheduled for December 2009.

OpenVAS 3.0 is already in its beta-phase. Besides a new
source code architecture and new features (e.g. IPv6 support)
this release essentially prepares the upcoming OpenVAS Manager
and OpenVAS Administrator as optional extensions. This combination
leverages the vulnerability scanner to a comprehensive vulnerability
management solution.
Support for OpenVAS 1.0 is discontinued shortly after 3.0 is released.
Version 2.0 will be supported at least until January 2011.
