finally have OpenVAS up and running on the latest version:

greenbone-security-assistant-3.0.3
openvas-manager-3.0.3
openvas-administrator-1.2.1
openvas-libraries-5.0.3
libmicrohttpd-0.9.15
openvas-scanner-3.3.1

and no sign of the GSAD consuming >100% CPU since I linked in the older version
of libmicrohttpd. The problem I have now is that it will not scan any host!
What I am seeing in openvassd.messages is the following:

[Wed Nov  7 08:50:09 2012][29528] user om starts a new scan. Target(s) :
www.somesite.com, with max_hosts = 1 and max_checks = 1
[Wed Nov  7 08:50:09 2012][29528] user om : testing 77.X.X.X (::ffff:77.X.X.X)
[29578]
[Wed Nov 7 08:50:10 2012][29578] user om : new KB will be saved as
/usr/local/openvas/var/lib/openvas/users/om/kbs/77.X.X.X
[Wed Nov 7 08:50:10 2012][29578] Client tried to raise the maximum checks
number - 4. Using 1. Change 'max_checks' in openvassd.conf if you believe this
is incorrect
[Wed Nov 7 08:50:13 2012][29578] user om : The remote host (77.X.X.X) is dead
[Wed Nov  7 08:50:14 2012][29578] Finished testing 77.X.X.X. Time : 4.19 secs
[Wed Nov 7 08:50:14 2012][29528] user om : test complete
[Wed Nov 7 08:50:14 2012][29528] Total time to scan all hosts : 6 seconds
[Wed Nov 7 08:50:14 2012][29528] user om : Kept alive connection
[Wed Nov 7 08:50:14 2012][29528] Communication closed by client

have read some other posts and modified openvassd.conf to included
log_whole_attack = yes but that does not appear to report anything further
detailed information. Another post said that they were able to resolve the
issue by running the following set of commands:

openvas-nvt-sync
openvasad --sync-feed
openvas-scapdata-sync
openvasmd --update
service openvas stop
service openvas start

but unfortunately that has made no difference either :(

Any thoughts on where I can look next ?

Thanks, Phil
