Our LDAP installation comes from a rather old Samba setup, which uses the "cn=Jack D. Ripper,dc=my-company,dc=de" scheme for the dn. The uid (e.g. "uid=jdripper") item is of course present and used for authentication in Linux, Windows, ... I'm not sure if this is standard, though.
I found some report in our customer support system about users in subtrees. Not sure whether this is related.
If the dn does not fit into the original pre-defined scheme in the config file, the search approach /might/ be a solution. In my case, the goal is just to avoid entering an "unusual" user name in the browser dialogue. Best, Albrecht.
