Hi,
'product detection': we need to use when we are Actually detecting the
product.
For example, detecting bugzilla, cacti.. etc.
'service detection': we need to use when we are detecting the service
instead of specific product.
For example services like, ssh, smb, http, ftp, ..etc. here we care for
only service which is running
and not the product.
This might help,
http://openvas.org/nvt-dev.html#product_detection_nvt
Note: Earlier family 'product detection' was not there. It's introduced
on later stage. Before
we use to use 'service detection' for all the detect NVTs. So some NVTs
has still ''service detection'
which are not updated recently.
Thanks,
Antu Sanadi

ok eero,
i am near to have it ready, but i need your advice and point of view :
what is for you the difference between 'service detection' and
'product detection' ?
i cant find any suitable explanation studying plugins.
why those are using 'product detection family' :
bugzilla_detect.nasl
cacti_detect.nasl
centreon_detect.nasl
while those are using 'service detection family' :
awstats_detect.nasl
aas_detect.nasl
???
