I completely agree which is why I'm looking for a solution.

Server:

# grep -r -e ping -e keepalive /var/etc/
/var/etc/openvpn-server.conf:keepalive 10 120

Client:

# grep -r -e ping -e keepalive /etc/openvpn/

So, even though 10s ping seems more aggressive than it probably needs
to be, I can't see pings making up such a substantial difference.

Just to update, the numbers for the previous 24h period are 483,133,678
total between the two OpenVPN machines but the tun0 interface total is
410,292,539 which seems much more reasonable.

The day before yesterday though it was 1,404,469,513 between the
OpenVPN hosts and 1,267,234,467 on the tun0 interface, so again, fairly
reasonable.

So apart from that one outlier that I just happened to look at, the
numbers look decent enough.

We can probably disregard this issue at this point.

Cheers,
b.
