They are contained in an instance of StringMapAttribute (a field itself). The attribute hierarchy is browsable at : http://www.openwfe.org/doxy/html/interfaceopenwfe_1_1org_1_1engine_1_1workitem_1_1Attribute.html Variables are bound into the engine by process definitions, they are not available outside of the engine, they are used for process definition interpretation.
