I'm checking out Ritwick's code (multiple-templates branch) in order to help him to solve a small roadblock he has encountered. I put Edoardo in CC because I will propose a small change to the base backend at the end of the email.
@Ritwick: with these changes https://github.com/openwisp/netjsonconfig/commit/5b08ebe60c7d9fd587d69a418073c5ddd5de3c0e the tests run without errors, some tests fail for minor issues except the hostapd ones which seem to fail because the output is missing entirely. Since it's trivial to implement support of multiple renderers and parsers direclty into BaseBackend, I want to add this small feature now in a backward compatible fashion.
