The CI Build of the role, which deploys a basic openwisp instance and runs tests on it each time we push to master, is installing the latest ansible version available from the python package index: https://github.com/openwisp/ansible-openwisp2/blob/master/.github/workflows/ci.yml#L75-L76
I guess we meant the minimum ansible version, you should be able to use something more recent. I will update the README, thanks for reporting this.
