Oh, thank you SO much! This is the answer we needed! We were jumping 
through hoops to get the ping check to happen through the VPN, messing with 
the board's DNS settings, etc. Was able to ping the board from the server 
at a shell, but the check was still failing. This solve it all, thank you!

The only other thing we still need is to have the VPN device added to the 
firewall "lan" zone via uci add_list firewall.zone1.device=<vpn_name>, 
which is fine.
