On at91rm9200, the boot process is a little complex, but is described here:

Does your board already boot, or are you trying to bring up a board which has never booted?

Essentially in the OpenWRT build the dfboot.bin binary is 'tiny program' referred to. Your best bet would be to try to get that running on your hardware first before trying to modify u-boot.
