on madwifi devices I do the same thing and it work fine...
The problem is the name clash between the wifi-iface section and the
network section from /etc/config/network. Something like that was
causing issues on madwifi as well, I'm pretty sure it's not mac80211
specific.

No, it's a known issue and will be fixed when some of the new code that
