 SOME of the possible causes...

 1. loose or interrupted wiring or a loose ethernet jack;
 2. ethernet cable to your provider might be too long;
 3. electrical grounding problems or electrical induction problems - both
 result in too much voltage on the cable;
 4. bad Ethernet PHY transceiver chip.. usually happens after a lightning
 storm in the area... if a lightning struck nearby it might have fried it;
 5. cat/dog/mice chewing on cables.
