 If you want to know, how doing big vendors /like cisco/ HW NAT, for
 example on their a9k routers CGN module, download the CGN module's
 software and extract/analyse it. It uses a lot of general purpose intel
 x86 CPUs and a special NAT binary handle those CPU cores. In cisco IOS
 there are a lot of optimizations as in MikroTik RoS and maybe in Linux
 kernel too. But the Linux kernel's goal is not providing routing platform
 but only a good base for it like in MikroTik RoS.
 NAT ASICs has a lot of limitations or that ASIC is not a cheap one.
