No.  I always use openvpn for this rather than trying to script
something myself.  You get automatic reconnects, etc, etc.

I like using certificates at both ends to ensure there's
no spoofing going on but usually turn off encryption and
rely on connecting via ssh for transport security.  YMMV
on this.  It's also handy
to put the rfc1918 addresses in local dns so you can use
names to connect to the remote boxes.
