I am a huge megafan of Openwrt but I want to be better at using all the really cool addons!! And I need your help! First of all I have to say that ssh, telnet is fine but I want a *real* GUI also so that is kind of a requerement if I am gonna learn... sure I know my way around ssh, telnet etc but I want a gui and right now I am running OpenWrt BarrierBreaker 14.07-rc3 on a tp-link wdr4300 v1.
Ok, so now for the questions... I know they might sound funny but oh well.. I have googled etc many time for an answer but sometimes you get 10 solutions so you get even more confused. First a confession...I actually prefer gargoyle because its just about perfect but so fewer addons..... yeah I know I can use same addons on gargoyle that works on openwrt but thats not what I want. I want to make openwrt more like gargoyle beause for example and this is something I *always* stuggle with when using Openwrt....... USB MANAGER!! format, eject, make a jffs partition, make the usb default root... What to do to get all that in ONE package? Ok, sure,,,, 10 packages then but as long as its Luci (or any other GUI) no probbs. This is what I love with gargoyle... you just unmount the usb then refresh the page and now you can format it default linux setup... I can then choose to download all plugins to it, put the TOR cache on it etc........ damn I wish I could do exactly the same thing in Openwrt + 100 more stuff... I notice there are some major USB plugins also.... nice. Ok, how about this one... I have fiber and adsl. Can I designate two WAN ports on Asus routers? Could be for loadbalancing or if one goes down or is to slow the other one takes ower,,,, same thing with my broadband 3g modem., mine is a huawei e173s-2, locked to Tre or Comhem (yeah I am a Swedish noob!! yeah! ) but I got a modem for all companies here so no probbs. I want this also to work just as smooth as in a regular linux dist in openwrt. I have a WD My Cloud EX4 (8TB) and yeeahh,.. its a beauty!! It comes with TWO giga wan ports and this woul be perfect for openwrt router... It can balance the network etc,,,, I bet there is a NAS plugin for sure.. hah if not thats a first ;) Not sure about putting it in a router though, a switch would handle that better... dunno. The plan was to put alll movies and everything I download straight onto it and then watch,,ยจ yeah right..... cant watch because the NAS cant keep up with the speed so it has to buffer all the time... suck.. maybe get rid of raid and run it as a jbod 8TB.... ;) problem solved This might be something that openwrt could do better I think....make the "watching" have prio over download.... sometimes its so much traffic so stuff just hangs. Dedicated router with lan gigabit with 100/100 fiber . a lot of traffic Also I have always wondered that the ubs-webcam support is for.... and I am talking d-link monitoring, vuezone etc..... or is it just plain webcam support? If so would it be possible to say buy 5 cheap webcams and use them for video surveillance? Like the my.dlink cloud. Great stuff,,, But if you can do the same with budget cams and openwrt why go buy those damn expensive cameras? Ok, I know there are limitations but maybe this is a good example of what I have been missing....... What about Entware? Can I run that? (dont know what it is really coz I never got it to work on my asus router.....) What about bluetooth support? I guess it would have to be using usb.... MAC support? Thunderbird? Any other neat MAC stuff that I should check out btw? my dreamrouter would be a small MMC that can do everything from host a www site, run a dns server (for my own domain) ON the router.... yeah I KNOW this can be done with bind... but where is the GUI? For now I am stuck with simple dns..... And what about the TOR implementation in Openwrt? Im so confused.... compared to gargoyle..... piece of cake! or wait... now I am mixing Tomato into this I think.... lol.... Is it possible to have a plugin that detects movements and gives off an alarm? Lets say i hook up a webcam.... or whatever. Possible? Something Android and Ios have is a tracking function... lets say someoe grabs your router.... well, bye bye.... nothing u can do. If someone nicks my galaxy tab or iphone 6 (soon i hope) i can track the phone, lock it down etc.... i guess you can buy a usb gps tracker and set it up that way? Ok for now but I would like some cool recommendations from u guys,,,, I looked at Batman but umm.... more please! I own a http://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap/ and i did see something mentioned about this.... this thing is packed in a box right now but with openwrt who knows that you can do... or maybe I am wrong here Ok guys, my first post.. will keep it shorter next time and have even more questions....and advice. Cheers, Marc Sweden (about 8 routers, new brand tp-link tl-sg2216 16 port switch, iptv, ipad, etc.... soon my mega asus x99 deluxe build will be done with TWO 4-port giga pci-express cards... so that gives me a total of 10 ports so i can controll everything from one computer,... yes I am a geek but damn proud!) PS. Help me out quickly with the usb-root thing pls.... i have a 32gb usb3 drive thats just sitting doing nothing. I WILL probably swith to gargoyle if you guys cant help me out. /m _______________________________________________ openwrt-users mailing list [email protected] https://lists.openwrt.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/openwrt-users
