What I generally do is go to /etc/config/wireless and under config wifi-iface I change "option network" to from 'lan' to 'wan' That way I can still install updates/patches. If I want to use it as a switch as well, I will swap the ports assigned to the LAN and WAN ports (so I have 4 WAN ports and 1 LAN port).
