This is just for the record. I've found a PPA of Boost 1.49. Location https://launchpad.net/~mapnik/+archive/boost Not particularly official-sounding, but if you're stuck on older Ubuntu releases it might be worth investigating. The PPA is applicable to both Ubuntus 10.04 LTS and 12.04 LTS. The next Ubuntu LTS will probably feature Boost 1.54.
