Hi Folks,

We recently set up a new list ([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>) for
sharing experiences of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine
Learning (ML) in network operations that utilise IETF technologies and
practices. To subscribe, please visit:
https://mailman3.ietf.org/mailman3/lists/ainetops.ietf.org/.

In addition to discussing the applicability of AI/ML to networks that utilise
IETF technologies, the mailing list will investigate and gauge interest in
whether there is concrete work that falls under the IETF activity scope to
cover AI integration in network operations, network adaptation to support AI
needs, or both. Our intended goal is not the creation of a new traditional IETF
Working Group, but rather to build on the momentum from the recent series of AI
for the network side meetings and form an IETF "Special Interest Group" (SIG).

Maybe we can start the discussion by answering a few anticipated questions:

1. Is AI for Network Operational Integration a fad?

There is growing interest in AI and the ongoing deployment of AI techniques
(including ML, NeuroAI, Deep Learning, et al.) for network operations and
integration. Several Internet-Drafts have been submitted, and frequent IETF
side meetings have been conducted. Furthermore, as new networking technologies
are being developed, we are seeing the incorporation of AI-native functions,
which will impact and be impacted by IETF protocols. The IETF should monitor
and discuss the development and impact of AI technologies on existing IETF
standards, as well as any potential new requirements that may arise.

2. Internet-Drafts, you say?

Yes, there are numerous I-Ds, including but not limited to:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-king-rokui-ainetops-usecases/
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-irtf-nmrg-ai-deploy/
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-rosenberg-ai-protocols/
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-pedro-nmrg-ai-framework/
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-hcl-rtgwg-osf-framework/
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-hcl-rtgwg-ai-network-problem/

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-sarischo-6gip-aiml-security-privacy/

It would be worthwhile to categorise their content and objectives and separate
the IRTF aspects (for, say, the NMRG RG) and IETF engineering and operational
impact, especially aspects which align with our interest(s) for our list and
SIG.

3. Overlap with existing IRTF RGs?

Several recent IRTF Internet-Drafts discuss the applicability of AI/ML in IETF
networks; however, these research documents are beyond the typical time horizon
and scope that an IETF Working Group (WG) would typically focus on. We aim to
identify requirements and functions for AI-enabled network operations that have
a shorter time horizon and near-term deployment for the Internet. As AI-related
NMRG research matures and is published, it could potentially lead to additional
IETF activity.

4. Overlap with existing IETF WGs?

There are recent proposals within NMOP and RTG working groups, as well as
Internet-Drafts with non-specific IETF WG categorisation. Where and when
applicable, we will provide a narrower focus on the broader application of AI
to network operations based on the scope of the list and SIG. We don't want to
overlap!

5. What would we like from the community in the short term?

Feedback! Do you agree or disagree with any of the above? Should we establish a
dedicated forum (mailing list and a potential Special Interest Group (SIG)) to
discuss AI integration in network operations, network adaptation to support AI
needs, or both? If you have an existing Internet-Draft, plan to submit a new
Internet-Draft, or have an early proposal relevant to us, please use this list
to inform us and the wider community.

Thanks, Dan.
