I am free to choose the distribution of the master server,

Is it then possible to have the slave servers running suse?

Currently (to ease upgrades and initial setup) the master server copies various compiled C binaries to the slave - this is why the docs say to use the same OS and ARCH for all opsview servers.

I am aware people on the list have used different arch's between the master and the slave, but certainly not OS's

The best thing to do is to use the lower common denominator for the master server, i.e. 32 bit SUSE or whichever the most common slave you have is, and ensure the 64 bit slaves have the full 32 bit compatibility packages on them.

Really, as long as you can standardise on the OS you may be able to work around the different ARCH's

We have looked for sponsors for us to do the build work on SUSE but as yet haven't found anyone willing. That said, we have had several installations working on SUSE in the past.

The source packages are within the yum repos's should you want to rebuild them yourself and I did put up some info on rebuilding the agent rpm yesterday here: http://docs.opsview.org/doku.php?id=developer:rebuild:rpm_agent - the principle for the other rpm's should be similar.
