I used a good link for solaris 10 which is good for nagios plugins and nrpe on any box as you are compiling it from source.

If you want to send command args, remember to compile nrpe with --enable-command-args, as well as the --with-ssl and --with-ssl-lib to make it similar to the rpm you are used to. You will also need dont-blame-nrpe=1 in nrpe.cfg once configured to enable args as well.

You shouldn't need to hack the nrpe.c file, only in solaris.
