maybe then the allowed_hosts setting in nrpe.cfg in the monitored host?

From the nagios/opsview server you must be able to run check_nrpe -H
host and get something like this:

NRPE v2.12

If you don't then you have either network issues of permission issues
in your nrpe server configuration.
