Thanks to both Simon and Paul for the assistance. My issue is now resolved. It turns out the nagios user on my slave was not sourcing its profile correctly. Once I fixed that issue everything cleared up.

I guess this is some kind of intermediate networking issues which causes each side to think the tunnel is still up.
