IT Database Administrator
The IT Database Administrator position is responsible for the
performance, integrity and security of the Business Services databases
via consistent database planning, development, troubleshooting, and
maintenance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Provide database administration and support - Daily 2. Design,
develop and maintain Business Services databases - Daily 3. Install,
configure, troubleshoot, and maintain a database system - Daily 4.
Implement, configure, and troubleshoot database instances,
replication, backup, partitions, storage, and access - Daily 5.
Monitor and optimize system performance using index tuning, disk
optimization, and other methods - Daily 6. Set user privileges within
the database environment - Daily 7. Establish the needs of users and
monitor user access and security - Daily 8. Monitor performance and
manage parameters to provide fast query responses to 'front end' users
- Daily 9. Map out the 'conceptual design' for a planned database in
outline - Daily 10. Database integration of consideration of both
'back end' organization of data and 'front end' accessibility for end
users - Daily 11. Refining the 'logical database design' so that it
can be translated into a specific data model - Daily 12. Further
refining the 'physical database design' to meet system storage
requirements - Daily 13. Installation and testing of new versions of
the database management system (DBMS) - As Needed 14. Maintaining data
standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act - Daily 15.
Develop and maintain database documentation, including data standards,
procedures and definitions for the data dictionary ('metadata') - As
Needed 16. Control database access permissions and privileges - Daily
17. Develop, manage and test database backup and recovery plans -
Daily 18. Ensure that storage, archiving, backup and recovery
procedures are functioning correctly - Daily 19. Engage in database
capacity planning - As Needed 20. Work closely with IT staff and
project managers, database programmers, web developers. and other
technical resources - As Needed 21. Communicate regularly with
technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database
integrity and security - Daily 22. Commission and install new
applications - As Needed 23. Monitor and test fixes to ensure
technical problems have been adequately resolved - As Needed 24.
Clearly document work instruction and include screen shots where
applicable - As Needed 25. Participate in weekly staff meetings and
related sub-meetings; this includes submitting required Status Reports
- Bi-Weekly/As Needed 26. Attend courses that improve Information
Technology and develop skills to better serve the user community - As
Needed 27. Maintain a safe and clean work environment involving
routine departmental maintenance, cleaning and organizing of technical
work areas and property - Daily CLEANING: Technical work areas,
storage room, labeling, and other duties ORGANIZING: Labeling all
equipment/property, logically straightening and storing items safely
and securely, inventorying supplies, alerting Manager of items that
need purchased 28. Assist in 1 on 1 training with computer users
(staff and team members) - As Needed 29. Utilize a collaborative team
approach for all projects - Daily 30. Promote our vision, values, and
services to all customers and stakeholders - Daily 31. Assist in
maintaining organization wide quality standards - Daily 32. Other
duties as requested and/or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Excellent communication, teamwork and negotiation skills
B. Good problem-solving and analytical skills
C. Familiarity with the main data manipulation languages and the
principles of database design
D. Flexibility and adaptability
E. Good organizational skills
F. Ability to work to tight deadlines under hectic situations
G. Business awareness and understanding of business requirements of
IT
H. A willingness to keep up to date with developments in new
technology
I. A commitment to continuing professional development
J. An understanding of information legislation, e.g. the Data
Protection Act.
11. Customer Service: including customer-oriented telephone and email
abilities that respond quickly, competently and patiently to computer
user problems and/or requests. 12. Communication: ability to
communicate effectively with a wide-range, diverse user community and
present ideas and solutions in a user-friendly language to team
members, as well as to non-technical staff and end-users. 13. Problem
Solving: gathering information, evaluating options and offering good
solutions. 14. Product and Technical Knowledge: General understanding
both of overall systems environment, such as system maintenance,
workstation support, internet connectivity and security services, as
well as specific supported software/applications. Familiarity with
alternative products and the nature of technical problems is also
important. 15. Training and Education: Knowing how to present complex
technical information to non-technical audiences and ability to design
and deliver instructional user training is also valuable. Ability to
consistently learn about new technologies while still supporting
current/older installations.
