This individual ensures that data recovery, data integrity, and database performance, availability, and maintenance are met through applying best practices and monitoring of policies, standards, and system processes relating to database management. Above all, this individual makes certain that the database solutions meet business objectives and establishes and maintains a high level of user trust and confidence in the database group’s knowledge of and concern for the users’ business needs. This individual must also demonstrate a willingness to work with and mentor associates of varying levels of technical expertise within the organization. *Essential Job Functions* • Provide first-level application support: Resolve problems and answer questions related to the database and layered products; contact vendor support when necessary; facilitate application development and customer problem resolution with optimum speed and efficiency. • Database performance monitoring and tuning: Closely monitor performance; identify problems and implement solutions; ensure the database is running at optimum speed and efficiency. • Maintain database backup/recovery environment: Respond quickly to refresh data; verify implementation of correct backup strategy; develop recovery procedures; support recovery from loss of data caused by user or system error. • Install and upgrade databases and related products: Keep databases at current release and maintenance levels, install supporting products; provide current, stable database environments. • Provide database design: Research and recommend optimal table and index design criteria balancing scalability, data integrity and maintainability; publish entity relationship and data flow diagrams, design standards and work with development staff; standardize environment and improve efficiency. • Provide database development: Develop application code using database programming languages and scripting languages to support application releases; analyze business requirements for application releases and, based on findings, provide recommendations for solution and estimates of work. • Perform application refreshes on request: Plan and coordinate data refreshes at predefined times from one environment to another at the request of the application development staff. • Reorganize database structures as needed: Automate procedures at regular intervals; use tools to reorganize or defragment database table spaces, tables, and indexes; provide an efficient database environment to maximize productivity and improve performance. • Capacity planning and reporting: Monitor file system space, database resource consumption, etc.; verify efficient use of disk storage and avoid out-of-space conditions. • Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, new database features and system enhancements. • Develop utilities for automatically monitoring the database performance, availability, security and data integrity. • Conduct application transaction volume analysis and interpret impact on database. • Adhere to departmental policies for reporting and managing trouble tickets and change control. • Establish, administer, and monitor database security including the setting of appropriate end-user database access control levels. • Assist in the development and definition of database documentation and standards. • Provide direction to and work with application development staff to develop database coding standards and best practices. • Communicate complex and technical information in a concise and articulate manner. • Consistently complete tasks within agreed upon target dates. • Oversee the implementation of database modifications and enhancements in regards to technical changes and change management. • Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team. • Attend daily production meetings while on-call and keep apprised of database trouble tickets and change requests in preparation for the meeting. *Education/Certifications* • High school diploma or equivalent • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline preferred; equivalent experience is acceptable • Oracle Professional Database Administrator certification is preferred *Experience/Minimum Requirements* • At least three (3) years experience in the design, administration, programming, and support of Oracle databases in a distributed Unix (Solaris preferred) computing environment *Other Skills/Abilities* • Experience administering Microsoft SQLServer databases is desirable • Thorough understanding of the Oracle database architecture and solid theoretical knowledge of relational database techniques • Thorough understanding of Oracle database performance tuning, design, security, scalability and industry best practices for administration • Experience in data extract, migration, queuing, and replication facilities • *Proficient Oracle PL/SQL and SQL coding skills with particular attention given to detail and accuracy* *• Proficient Oracle SQL performance tuning and optimization skills* • Experience with Unix scripting languages (e.g., Korn shell, Perl) • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment; good interpersonal skills • Ability to weigh various suggested technical solutions against the original business needs and choose the most cost-effective solution • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment • Keen attention to detail and ability to access impact of design changes prior to implementation • Highly self-motivated and cooperative attitude • Strong customer service orientation • Good written and oral communication skills • Ability to present and explain technical information to diverse types of audiences in a way that establishes rapport and gains understanding Organizational Relationship Reports to: IT Database BI Manager Title(s) of direct reports (if applicable): N/A Working Conditions: Works in a normal office setting with no exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
