Hi!

 sorry if I am digressing..

Like I was telling someone...every two years
there is 'something really new'...which blows
 the 'old away'..

Like when I started my working life..
Management guys were in "BIG" demand..

later softies came to be in "BIG" demand..

Now, thanks to 'dot com bust' etc...

 'who next'!!!

I agree about the Point and click..

Wish somone would also send a new
 'Change Management Pack' for life!!!!

I won't mind it even if it is on command line,
and would involve writing shell scripts to
 'handle and use' it!!!!!>..

If you are really worried about SQL Server, go ahead and learn it.

It won't take too long, and it won't cost you all that much.

Learning it would only help if you are doing consulting work though, I
think. Shops that use Oracle are not as likely to bother with SQL =
Server,
but that's just a guess on my part.

Do you want to do consulting, work for a large company with enough =
money to
pay you, or wear many hats in a smaller shop?

It depends on what your goals are and your personal preference.

Sure everything will be point and click! But it means nothing!
Who will open tars, report bugs, download patches, etc?!
        =20
When we're using Oracle 7, Oracle said that Oracle 8 will work by
itself,
tune itself, low cost maintenance, etc.
        =20
        So, tell me what happened?
        =20
Also in my opinion DBA duties includes database architect.

        Dear List !
Some background : i've been around Oracle for several years , i'm
DBAing for
2+ years now , i have written some java code (jdbc , some XML etc) ,
perl ,
        PL/SQL , Tcl/Tk , a lot of UNIX scripting .
.Where do i go to from here ?
        =20
Many people say that the profession of Oracle DBA is going to be
less
demanded in future , because of :=20
        1) either other DB ( like less-expensive MS SQL Server or free
MySQL) will
occupy the market , especially in small enterprises ;=20
        2) or Oracle will "improve" the DB management and make it "point and
click"
, so you do not need a dedicated Oracle DBA at all or you need less
Oracle
        DBAs .
        =20
So , the bottom line is : what should i learn now ? how can i extend
my
expertise ? In which fields ?
        =20
        Please share your thoughts !
Thanks a lot in advance !
