I speak english and french. I took two japanese classes about 12 years ago because I was bored. So I wasn't as motivated as some other people might be.

I thought that the pronunciation and vocabulary were fairly easy, but reading/writing very difficult. You probably already know that japanese has two alphabets in addition to using a set of characters similar to chinese characters. I wouldn't plan on being able to read japanese unless you are willing to spend a few years on it.
Most japanese people with which I tried to speak japanese knew english better than I knew japanese, and I ended up speaking english with them. So I didn't have a lot of opportunities to practice my japanese. On the other hand, I didn't go live in Japan.

I did get to practice writing with a paint brush (for my own entertainment, not part of the class curriculum.) Since I'm a poor artist my attempts at paint brush writing were pathetic.
