IMHO, this is just a marketing gimmick.
Auto-tuning won't work on DB for the same reason
it doesn't work at the OS level:
the system will spend more time tuning itself
to cope with occasional glitches than it will
doing work. Watch what happens with NT for a good
example of this problem. It's a known problem
of feedback systems, which is what you need to
do auto-tuning.
You can find a solution that tunes for the middle
of the road, but unless you freeze it, it won't
work anywhere as well as they promote it.
Known problem, ages old, no solution.
Mathematically and in practice.
It will just be a nice to have for all those
IT managers out there looking at excuses to
"downsize" the really competent people in
their organisations: usually the DBAs and the
Sys Admins. It's rubbish and will never fly,
but it will go down well with those who only
analyze $$$ results in the short term.
Just another fad. Looks good for the "TCO"...
Doesn't affect me at all, but I find it
quite amusing! :-)
