Well, then hope that your ip addresses don't change, and if they do, I hope your network admins will tell you. (do they always?) dns aliases are a nice way to shield your users from unexpected changes like this. You may want to follow up with your network admin to figure out why your network aliases/dns names don't work.

One possibility caould be database going down while you are connected.
We experienced similar thru perl couple of times coupled with ORA 3113
