Volker,

Got the same behaviour when trying to install 9i with 8.1.7 running
and 256M of RAM. Started like a charm when I stopped 8.1.7. Quite
obviously you do not have another instance running but it suggests to me
that their %$?#@ of Java Virtual Machine needs a lot of memory. You may
have Apache, MySQL, Postgres or whatever running, perhaps that shutting
a few things down would help.

If you can read French, the best practical Linux doc I have found is
at http://www.medsyn.fr/perso/g.delafond/survie.htm. Nothing on Oracle,
cooking-book style and written by a physician, not a professional system
administrator (this may explain that) but really good.
