Veronica, yes, you can do backups that way; however, it's preferable to
place one tablespace at a time in backup mode, back up its files, then take
it out of backup mode.  The reason is that while a tablespace is in backup
mode, all changes to objects in the tablespace cause entire Oracle blocks to
be written to the redo log.  If all of your tablespaces are in backup mode
at the same time, redo writes for the tablespaces whose files are not
currently being copied will be unnecessarily large.

I'm plannig to test hot backups and I am wondering if I can place several
tablespaces on backup mode, copy the datafiles and then end the backup mode
for all datafiles at once.
Would that be ok? (of course backing up controlfie, and logs generated
during backup)
Any of you have a unix script for hot backups and want to share it?
