Thanks - yes: If I change (select '0' foo from dual) to (select 0 foo from
dual) then it works (8.1.6 and 8.1.7).
It's just a bit annoying that this behaviour has changed; can't find
reference to it in the 8.1.7 manuals. I've got some code which does
something similar - I guess it's a bit sloppy passing a number as a string
to TO_CHAR in the first place, but it used to work OK. Guess the code will
just have to be fixed!
