Ethan, I'm not sure what you mean by SID.
Do you mean an environmental like ORACLE_SID? On NT, this does not exist unless you create it by issuing 'set oracle_sid=prod'. Similiar thing on Unix, I think. Internally (in Oracle), you can check things like v$database, v$instance, even v$thread for the instance that you are connected to but this may not be the SID. There are also couple of functions called sys.database_name or sys.login_user that return some interesting information. hope this helps.
