Joe: I have a vague, hazy recollection of that as well. Way back under v6 (when men were men and sheep were nervous :-) ), I think I recall reading that the root user was forbidden to do a "connect internal" to the database even if a member of the "dba" group. I remember having to setup an account to be used, but that may have been specific to our port (DEC Ultrix).
Ahhhhh, yes. The days of SQL*DBA (didn't even have to "connect internal" to startup/shutdown the database back then). . . Actually, I just ran a really quick test under Linix and it wouldn't take. This was under v8.1.7. I will have to get access to some other systems tonight to see if it is true for v7/v9 and other OS's such as Solaris and HP-UX.
