You need to migrate from 8.1.6 to 8.1.7 using the Oracle 8.1.7 CD and
using the Installer and use the Database Migration Assistant or
do the upgrade manually by running the u081060.sql script. That will
do the migration for u. I prefer the manual method since it gives greaterf
lexibility.
Take a full backup of ur database on tape and also a full database export b4
doing the installation/upgrade. Stop ur listener and backup ur listener.ora,
tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora, init<sid>.ora and the OraInventory directory.
Create a new directory called 8.1.7 under /u01/app/oracle/product.
In the Oracle .profile, set ur LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH to the new values.
Change the oratab entries to 8.1.7. Also, change the ORACLE_HOME in the
.kshrc file to reflect the new ORACLE_HOME.
Then run the Installer and install the 8.1.7 database and run the above
script and also the utlrp.sql script and check for INVALID objects after
running the latter.
Remember to set up a link between ur pfile and ur ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory
since Oracle looks for the parameter file in the same.
Modify ur listener.ora and sqlnet.ora entries to reflect the new
ORACLE_HOME.
Start up listener........thats it, u r on !!!!

Hello all,
I was working with an 8.1.6 DB and I needed to migrate to 8.1.7. As I
was newbie (And i keep on being that) I copied all the files related
with the DB (control, dbf..). I created a new DB with the same name and
path as the 81.6 one and replaced its files with the one I saved
previously.
Maybe it´s a madness solution...
My problem now is that I get the 'ora 24314 service handle not
initialized' error. I have read something in metalink, note 122183.1,
just the point in which it sais 'If the ORACLE_HOME points to the 8.1.7
software yet the database
was created with 8.1.6 or 8.1.5, then this error can occur' is my
problem.
I don´t know how could I resolve it. Could somebody orient me? Or if you
think it´s impossible to recover, please, tell me?
