Ken

The database is not up. The NT services are not running.

To start them, from GUI go to Start|Control Panel|Administrative
Tools|Services, find the Oracle service and start it. Check the service to
be sure it is "Auto Start" enabled.

If you cannot get to the machine, telnet to the box and, at the DOS prompt,
type :  net start oracleservice{sid}

The above will start the Oracle service and the database both.

hope this helps

 8.1.7 on Dell W2000 server.

When I try to login via sqlplus I get this:

ORA-01034 Oracle not available
ORA-27101 shared memory realm doesn't exist

Then I get:

Login:
Password:

And this error:
ORA-12560 TNS: protocol adapter error.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Thanks,
