There is one last, but important step.

This is clearly documented in the Oracle8i Standby Database Concepts and Administration Manual. http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle8i/doc_library/817_doc/server.817/ a76995/standbys.htm#27363 In short, you just add the tablespace to the primary, wait for the standby to fail with ORA-01157, then issue the following command on the standby: SQL> alter database create datafile '<foo>' as '<bar>'; Where foo is the location of the datafile on the primary, and bar is the location on the standby (usually the same). If you create a tablespace with several datafiles, you will have to issue this command a few times after recovering the standby and waiting for the ORA-01157 each time.
