I think that you have to examine CAREFULLY both charsets. If you do not use in your data any of the characters that are different between the two you can probably succeed with alter database. I did it with no problems.
Check also the nls_lang parameter in the registry of the server. When you do import/export/SQL loader on the server there will be conversion if the nls_lang in the server does not match your charset.
