All this ranting is nice but consider the following: 1) You do not install oracle on a server so much. In fact, in our shop this is done by the technical people, not the DBA. The DBA got the machine with oracle already installed and just build the database.
2) When you have to do cross platform development Java is the tool to save on resources. 3) Any machine that's need to run a production database should be strong enough to run Java ok.
