Years ago, we backed up an 8.1.5 production database (along with it's "dev"
environment) with the RMAN catalog housed on an NT workstation running
7.3.4. Worked just fine. We eventually upgraded the NT box to 8.1.5 also,
but that was just an export/import and we were off and running again...

The RMAN recovery catalog is just another "database application" to the
database housing it. There really aren't any version-specific demands
placed by RMAN upon that database (of which I'm aware), save that it is
accessible by SQL*Net. I'm not recommending 7.3.4 for the repository,
though... :-)
