Check your /etc directory for a file called auto_home. If this exists and
the automountd is running, then this is the cause of the problem. I just
comment the /home line out of the auto_master and restart the daemon. I
think that this is the root of you problem. Let me know if this does not do
it.

It doesn't look like it.  I did 'mount' and 'df'.  Both did not report
'/home' as being mounted.
There must be a way around this.  Must keep looking...
