Tom, I did a quick test a couple of years ago (I think it was on 7.3.4) and found that when starting up after a clean shutdown Oracle doesn't actually read the redo logs, it just needs the files in the right location. Three step test. 1. Clean shutdown (immediate) of small test db. Removed redo logs. Startup had error. 2. Clean shutdown (immediate) of small test db. Shuffled redo logs (renamed log1-->log2; log2-->log3; log3-->log1). Startup OK. 3. Shutdown abort of small test db. Shuffled redo logs. Startup had error.
Don't remember why I needed to know this. Maybe just curiosity. Though no harm in taking the log files backup too but they are not really needed?
