You probably have the sys password incorrect on instance2.  If you specify "as sysdba" it basically ignores the password if you are authorized as an OS user (belong to group oracle, for example).

I have 2 instances on a sun box.
instance abc I can connect by just -- sys/not_default@abc
but on instance def I can't connect by
sys/not_default2@def    it gives a
ERROR:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

Warning: You are no longer connected to ORACLE.

I have to use sys/not_default2@def as sysdba.
why?
