Hi,

I hope my response isn't too late...

It may well be because when you do "select function(x) from table" the
query can return after processing the first few rows only (ie: FIRST_ROWS)
type execution. As soon as you ask for a count of those rows though it
must process every row (ie: ALL_ROWS). If the table is very large then
this is most likely your problem - although it's not a "problem" its just
the way things go.

Of course if you are running "select function(x) from table" through a
product like SQL*Plus that will print all the rows to the screen and this
is still much quicker then you might have a problem worth looking into. To
be honest I'm not sure if sort area size has a big impact on a simply
"select count(*)" but it might since a type of sort is used to count the
rows. I also have a feeling that using a function on a table normally
prevents parallel querying so perhaps there are some opportunities there -
but I cannot offer any specific advice.

Regards,
     Mark.

Oracle 817 on W2k:

SELECT FUNCTION(X) FROM TABLE works fine.

SELECT COUNT (*) FROM
(SELECT FUNCTION(X) FROM TABLE) where the function and the table are the
same as above, takes hours and hours, without any result, and I have to
stop
it. There is NO ERROR MESSAGE.
The same story (no result, no error message) it's happening when:
INSERT INTO TABLE1 SELECT FUNCTION(X) FROM TABLE

I need some help.
