In my opinion, there are languages you learn because you'll have to deal with them whether it is to make use of a good set of scripts that someone has made available, or programs you'll need to maintain at some level.  And there are languages you learn because they allow you to quickly and efficiently get stuff done.  There is overlap between categories, but in category 1, I generally place the likes of Perl, C, PL/SQL, ksh, Java and the like.  In category 2, I prefer Python; Perl goes here too for many DBA's.
