I have
not played with RAC yet but was wondering why we should shutdown down the
database (except for the SYSTEM TS).
Can't
we put the Tablespace in the offline mode and then move/rename the
file?
Can we
still put the TS in the offline mode in RAC? Is it doable from any instance or
should it be done from all instances?

-----Original Message-----And forget about gsd and srvctl - that stuff has nothing to do with RUNNING the database (but has to do with e.g. software install). Also, the parameter is cluster_database=false, parallel_server was for OPS back in Oracle8i, which (as everybody knows:-) is completely different from RAC.

In the end, all you need to do is to startup single instance (cluster_database=false) in mount mode while you do the rename.

Well, "rename file" actually updates the control file, so as long as the control file is accessible to all nodes, all instances should know about it. As for the procedure, you need to mount the database in exclusive mode (only 1 instance, by specifying "PARALLEL_SERVER=FALSE" in the init.ora), rename the file, bring the instance down and start it up in shared mode.-----Original Message----- Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 3:36 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L How do you rename files in RAC databases? When dealing with single instance db 1. shutdown 2. startup mount 3. copy file to new location using OS util. 4. alter database rename file... 5 startup. But now we have gsdctl, srvctl... So, what is the procedure ti rename file? We are using Tru64, so we have no raw devices.
