Actually, it won't. If you have built a kernel (SAM is usually the easiest way) then the kernel build process will boot the machine and push the new kernel into place. A simple shutdown will not do it.

Some parameter is getting set or not getting set. For most Unix versions the "env" command dumps all environment variables.
