Onames is deprecated because it works reliably and without much ado. With LDAP, On the other hand, life gets interesting. Oracle LDAP is truly portable among All other OID instances. Forget about WebSphere, WebLogic or iPlanet, it works with OID only. I'll be darned if I install the whole huge monster like OID just to be able to locate instances. I'll rather use NFS mapped tnsnames.ora instead.
